Video Transcript:
What is the the world’s leading cause of preventable blindness? Trachoma. For centuries, Trachoma has slowly and painfully stolen the eyesight of millions. Today, more than 150 million are infected, and 1/10 the world’s population is at risk. The world suffers 3 billion dollars in lost productivity every year from this debilitating disease. But Trachoma is treatable and preventable. In the last century, Trachoma has been eliminated from most industrialized countries. Now, the International Trachoma Initiative is working to eliminate blinding Trachoma throughout the world. Through an innovative and proven strategy, called SAFE. ITI works with governments and other partners to prevent and treat Trachoma. In just five years, ITI supported programs have reduced Trachoma significantly in nine countries. By 2020, the world can be rid of it forever. If you’ve never heard of Trachoma, take a closer look.
